* Great Sand Dunes National Park * CO * 02.03.23 *
We have driven by these dunes 20 times. 1st time hiking them. Different from White Sands National Park in New Mexico or Sleeping Bear Dunes in Michigan. What these lack in acreage, they make up and vertical.
The dramatic slopes and shifting sands made for good photography. But even better the slopes were tons of fun for sliding down hills. We stood up, Silver Surfer style, but the kids all used sleds or cardboard. Being skiers, we questioned some of the steep ones if sand avalanches are a thing. We are here to talk about it, so we guess no. When you slide the sand slides too. Cool effect.
We had perfect hiking weather in the low 40’s. Can’t imagine hiking in summer when surface sand temps can hit 140*.
Bonus of a beautiful Sun Dog to end our day.
