Finally got to ski Wolf Creek. Now we know why the kids love it so much. Great mountain. Great down to earth people.
I was saying to Bill I liked all the above tree line open bowls. He pointed out we were not above tree line, but mountain tops were wide open due to beetle kill. It also made for some nice glade skiing. Good for people like me who like the trees but are intimidated by the trees. Love the result but not the cause.
The mountain is privately owned and the owner wants to develop it but too much opposition with a battle going on for over 20 years. Developed or not developed, I love the mountain and its’ prolific snow. It’s awesome undeveloped. But I am not ashamed to admit if the owner wins, I will have a first deposit in on a condo.
We stayed on the east side of Wolf Creek in South Fork. Going from South Fork to Wolf Creek is easier than the drive from Pagosa Springs to Wolf Creek. So, for inclement weather like we had it was much appreciated. South Fork is less developed and much less expensive. Probably a 20-minute drive to the mountain. Check out this cabin in South Fork, CO that we stayed at: Riverside Meadows.

We paid only $105 a night. It has a hot tub, and it is right on the Rio Grande River. The owners Fritz, Paula (and Sadi) are good folks and love sharing their magical property.
