Forget planes, trains, and automobiles. We are more the truck, row boat, and horse set. Crossing into Mexico. Se requiere pasaporte. If you visit Big Bend National Park, make sure to save a day to go visit Boquillas, Mexico. This one is more about the journey than the destination. Grab your passport, drive deep into the park, go through a customs office, walk down the shore to the Rio Grande. A man in a rowboat picks you up and shuttles you to the other side for $5 round trip. You hop on a horse or a donkey for another $5 roundtrip (you can walk or take a beat-up old pick-up truck too) and you go about a mile up hill to the small town of Boquillas. You have a guide that stays with you the whole time. They have about 200 residents that survive on souvenirs and tourism. Our guide took us to meet his wife at his house (with a small souvenir store in the front of course). We also met one of his daughters (selling bracelets of course). The food was amazing, especially the fresh guacamole. You must be back through the customs office by 5 pm or else you get the privilege of spending the night at the one Airbnb in the town. Next trip here we plan to do just that and visit the crystal cave. Muy divertido!
