Mackinac (pronounced Mackinaw) is like stepping back in time to a kinder, slower world. No cars, only horse drawn carriages and bicycles. I am still processing the gentleness of the place. We stayed at the stately Grand Hotel enjoying afternoon tea, duck races, sun bathing by the gorgeous Ester Williams pool, lounging in the rocking chairs on the world’s longest porch with views of the Straits of Mackinac. Coat and tie for men after 4 pm, 5 course dinners, followed by nightly dancing to the sounds of the Grand Hotel Orchestra. I kept expecting the Rat Pack to stroll buy with cocktails in hand. Make sure to rent and ride a bike around the island. Search out the Secret Garden. Enjoy some Murdicks’s fudge. Take a horse and carriage to The Woods Restaurant. Visit Mission Point… I could go on and on…
