Check out this beautiful herd of Elk. Our guide was amazing, and we got so close! The guide said the herd has gotten accustomed to the sleighs this late in the season. A single human could never get so close, they would spook the herd. But the guide said the elk can’t distinguish us from the sleigh allowing us to get up close and personal. We learned fascinating facts about the elk. How is the refuge managed today? How do the elk interact with the other animals on the National Elk Refuge? We learned about antlers, life span, migration, baby elk, the rut, predators, history, management pros and cons, etc. The open air of the National Elk Refuge on a sleigh was the perfect setting for our lessons on nature as the views took our steamy breath away.
