Bill and I took a chill hike near Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs and Resort. You pick up the trail behind the resort and start with traversing a rock cliff for about a ¼ mile. It’s a bit of a scramble, but quickly flattens out to a trail with rolling hills of sage and juniper and stunning views from the mesa.
It was in the low 30’s when we hiked, but we were surprisingly warm. We realized we were much higher then suspected at 7,000 ft altitude. The high desert sun gets HOT! So, dress in layers and bring your sunscreen.
In the lobby of the Spa, you can see a map of what this village once looked like. It is said that as many as 10,000 people lived in these pueblos with 2,000 to 3,000 rooms that were up to three stories tall. Once you are in the heart of the village ruins you will find pottery pieces everywhere. It becomes easy to imagine a bustling village and the piece of history which you are now standing in. Something nice to contemplate as you head back to the hotel for a nice long soak.
