Check out the Wolf Relocation Project on Isle Royale. This ongoing sixty-year predator/prey study of wolves and moose on Isle Royale provides the backdrop for a new chapter of understanding regarding these two iconic animals and the ecosystem in which they interact. The future story is yet to be written. Two volunteers spend the summer in this camp collecting moose carcasses. They document and preserve the details and causes of death. They said this year they have already lost over 200 moose due to starvation “because the wolves arrived late.” I don’t quite understand why they were late considering this is an island, but that can remain a mystery for now. Interesting fact, she said only sick moose will run from wolves. Healthy moose stand their ground. The wolves will only attack the ones running. Natural selection and the complexity of nature at its’ finest.
